In hopes of a better future, the youth need to be our area of focus. The task at hand can be more than an individual could accomplish in one lifetime. But when we adopt the idea that, “each one shall teach one”, a great impact can be made on a community. Many don’t know where to start when it comes to asking for help. But if you see a way to help, do it! You never know who’s watching when you’re leading by example.

Inspired by a jog down memory lane, I thought of the childhood impact on adult life. Starting from day one of life, maybe it’s the hospital, or when you’re first released to go home. By that point, predictions have already been made about your life. The zip code determines the resources you may or may not have access to. Area D2 is highlighted red with a grade D, which will be the lack of development one experiences. This will ultimately have an impact on the rest of your life, but don’t let this be the reason not to believe in your abilities. That starting point was not what you chose, so choose the life you want to live. Be the new product of that environment! And know that I will be the one who changes the narrative.

There are many influences, many things telling you what you should be, and how to do it. But when seeking clarity of self, I have come to know that the answers are within. Confirming, I would still be in search of myself, If I thought I could go outside and find it.

Words of Affirmation

You believe words of affirmation should come from others… all along it’s needed from yourself!

Affirmation or encouragement is needed even when things are going as planned. And when things are bleak, outside affirmations can be what feeds the energy to start or continue. However, even when the support is there, there are moments when you still seem to fall short of believing in yourself. Let this be your reminder... all along its needed from yourself!

Becoming You

Even you don’t see an example of it growing up, you can become what you believe.

While being interviewed at the Cincinnati Art Museum, I was asked to “Speak to that future artist, young boy or girl that sees someone that looks like them...” Although I answered the question, I realized that my younger self had not seen me as an artist. I had never been to a museum as a kid, to view the work of living black artists. So, this is my visual response. Even if you don’t have an example of it growing up, you can be what you believe in. Many can’t see who they’re going to be in the future. The special place is in the present, where you keep the belief alive. Then once you believe, it’s about building good habits through discipline. And lastly, falling in love.
